Western States Endurance Run.  www.ws100.com

Number of days remaining to Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent

Course description. (both of the preceding links are maintained by Matt Carpenter).

My annual goal since 1991 has been to run up Pikes Peak.  The first couple of years I "only" did the accent, 13.32 miles and 7,815 elevation gain. The last three miles to the top are run at around 12,000 - 14,110 feet.

Starting in 1993 I made the leap to the "round trip" or marathon. I have missed a couple of years.  1999, I made one of the biggest mistakes ever - I forgot to send in my registration. I didn't find this out until the Friday before the run. This is after I had flown to Colorado and spent the better part of the week acclimating on the mountain. Was I disappointed!!

Running the "Peak" is truly an experience. To learn more about it visit Matt Carpenter's web sit at: www.skyrunner.com  Also you can down load an application from the Pikes Peak Marathon Association 's web site at:  www.pikespeakmarathon.org

I generally go to Pikes Peak about 10 days before the run. I spend about a week (6-7 days camping at Barr Camp (about 10,000 feet) and the A-Frame (about 12,000 feet). I run/walk the upper part of the mountain.

My trail running is done mostly in the Buckhorn Wilderness and Olympic National Park (ONP) on the Olympic Peninsula located in Washington State.

Year 2002 is starting with a bone in the ankle area broken (fibula). I hit a hole at night on 12/21/01. Started running again on the treadmill March 15, 2002.

Trail Running Log for 2000
May 20, 2000 - Dungeness trail head to about 1 mile on the Boulder Shelter trail past Camp Handy.    about 9 miles  1:38

May 28, 2000 - Dungeness trail head to about 1 mile short of Boulder Shelter.  about 11 or 12 miles  2:10:10

The trail crew was out for the second weekend in a row. They are doing a great job. Rumor has it there a bunch of down trees at the point I turned around. Next weekend I'll find out. Going all the way to Boulder Shelter. Shelter is at about 5,000 ft. 6/10 rumor is true regarding trees.

June 3/4, 2000 - No run.

June 10, 2000 - Dungeness trail head to Boulder Shelter (1:34). Avalanche wiped out all the trees and the shelter in 98/99 winter. I was surprised to see the shelter standing with so many trees down near it. Some hikers indicated the shelter was rebuilt 9/99. Lots of snow. In fact it started snowing while I was there. The hikers also said they saw a bear and a couple cubs cross the snow field.  2:50:15 and about 2,500 ft. up.

June 18, 2000 - Dungeness trail head to past Boulder Shelter (1:33). Went down Home Lake trail ~1/2 mile, too many trees down for running. Turned around & went up Marmot Pass trail ~1/2, not bad, some trees down. Significant snow melt around the Shelter since last week. 3:20  June 25, 2000 - near Camp Handy up Bldr Shelter trail; cleared trees; ran from Bldr Shltr to Marmot Pass (~6,000 ft) & back. Snow in several places along Marmot trail, but passable. ~1.75 hr running (~6 mi). Backpacked & hiked another ~10 miles total. June 29, 2000 - Dungeness trail to about a mile past Camp Handy w/ 15# pack (4.3 mi one way) 0:53 in; 0:41 out; total 1:33:56. Not much elevation gain. Backpacking in 6/30.
June 30 & July 3, 2000 - Hiked in & out w/ 65#/60# pack, 4.3 miles each way. Hiking with the pack really works the calf muscles.  July 4, 2000 - Dungeness trail, Bldr Shelter 1:28 Marmot Pass (2:03), out Tubal Cain trail, ~19.7 miles, 4:31:09. Three snow fields to cross. Trail all the way in pretty good shape. Campers at Bldr Shelter didn't see the bear.   July 22, 2000 - East coast run/C&O Towpath Georgetown (Washington D.C.) ~27 miles, ~5.25 hr; the last five miles were at a 15 minute pace.
July 29, 2000 - Dungeness trail, Bldr Shelter ~1:33, Marmot pass (~2:15), out Tubal Cain Trail ~4:00,  last three miles basically walked (ran out of gas, so to speak) ~19.7 miles total, 5:03. In general trail is in very good shape, no snow except one small patch & it probably melted by now.  August 20, 2000 - PIKES PEAK MARATHON 6:16:55 Best Yet!! Time to the top 4:00:29
